Mammoth Ivory and Schreger Lines
Proboscidian (tusk) ivory is identified by the grain pattern that is visible in its cross section. These patterns, which are called Schreger Lines, are formed by a series of spirals running clockwise and counter clockwise over one another. This pattern resembles a star. When this star's points have acute angles the ivory is mammoth or mastodon, which means it is ancient fossilized ivory and that the mammoth ivory for sale is legal. If the points have obtuse angles the ivory is from modern elephants and therefore illegal. These lines can be easily identified under a microscope.
Evaluation of Schreger lines was developed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in order to keep any elephant ivory from entering the country disguised as legal mammoth ivory for sale. These Schreger lines, or patterns in the cross sections, can be examined to determine if the ivory came from mammoths or elephants. As the woolly mammoth has been extinct for over 10,000 years, their ivory is not protected by regulation and is used to make a variety of carved art, mammoth ivory jewelry, and other crafts.
"The fossilized walrus ivory we use in our ivory jewelry can span the neutral tones from creamy white to honey, reddish brown to black, depending on the minerals the walrus tusk was in contact with and the length of time it was in the ground. It is legally obtained from Native owned land, having been excavated by Eskimo families from old village sites on St. Lawrence Island, Alaska." ~Jenny Byrne

Avoid contact with lotions, oils, extreme heat, moisture and soaking to help prevent dulling. Polish with a clean, soft white cloth. Do not use jewelry cleaners, chemicals, soaps, or detergents.

“We use mammoth ivory for our beloved polar bear jewelry, or when we want a nice creamy skin tone. Occasionally we will use mammoth ivory from Siberia, which is generally whiter than North American mammoth ivory from resting in ice rather than soil.” ~Jenny Byrne

This delicate pair of ancient fossilized walrus ivory earrings features one of our favorite creatures, the delightful hummingbird, in gleaming sterling silver and handcrafted Zealandia design.
Walrus ivory is easily differentiated from elephant ivory and mammoth ivory as walrus ivory is a tooth rather than a tusk and as such does not have any Schreger lines. These walrus teeth have a unique marble like quality, with an outer dentine layer and a mottled inner core, as with all teeth. Trade in walrus ivory is regulated by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service and an international agreement entitled the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES).
Only Eskimos and Aleuts may legally carve new walrus. Sale of uncarved, new walrus is illegal. However, because fossilized walrus ivory is ancient and not obtained from living animals it can be legally traded and carved. The import and export of fossilized walrus ivory is closely monitored by the Fish and Wildlife Departments of each country in accordance with CITES to ensure it is ancient material in order to protect these wonderful creatures.
The ancient walrus ivory Zealandia uses is excavated by native Eskimos from islands off the coasts of Alaska and Siberia, and has been in the ground or ocean anywhere from 300 – 5,000 years. Fossilized walrus ivory is one of the rarest and most beautiful ivories available. Zealandia’s walrus ivory is excavated by the Bering Straits Inuit from privately owned land within old villages and hunting sites. This fossilized walrus ivory has slowly taken on an exotic array of warm colors ranging from creams and golden tans to chocolate browns due to the mineral deposits in the environment where it has lain for centuries.

Steven Battelle’s Ancient Greek Coin from Corinth, 375-300BC featuring Pegasus flying on the front side and the helmeted head of Athena on the backside. Coin is set in granulated 22kt gold pendant and bail with a small diamond set in the bail. Comes with certificate of authenticity.
The City of Corinth and Pegasus: Corinth, situated in the northeast corner of the Peloponnesus on the Isthmus of Corinth, was one of the largest cities in ancient Greece and a rival of Athens. The city controlled overland access to the Peloponnesus and to continental Greece, as well as the maritime ways to the East and West of the Mediterranean. In time, Corinth started to create a string of daughter cities, colonies such as Leukas. Ambrakia (Arta), Anactorium, Dyrrhachium (Durazzo) and even Terina in southern Italy and Syracuse in Sicily. All these cities followed Corinth's monetary system. Coinage was essential to Corinth as an important commercial center. After Acgina, Corinth was one of the earliest cities in Greece to strike and use coins, beginning in the 7th century BC. Her silver staters, the "colts" or "poloi" (in Greek), issued from the earliest times, featured the winged Pegasus, wondrous horse of Greek mythology, and the helmeted head of Athena, goddess of wisdom. The addition of control marks, symbols and figures began appearing on the reverse field of this coinage around 415 BC. The purpose of these little symbols, in a great variety of shapes and figures, has long been inconclusively debated. Nevertheless, their forms are clear enough to be identified, and thus we can admire the varied series of items, such as weapons, birds, animals, sea creatures, and mythological figures. Pegasus, the winged horse was born from the blood of the gorgon Medusa and was said to have been fathered by Poseidon, god of the sea. He was eventually tamed by Bellerophon near the fountain of Peirene and was chosen as the symbol for a number of Greek coinage types. It was especially appropriate for the city of Corinth which was believed to have been the city of Bellerophon.

Thrace, Cherronesos, 350-300 BC AR Hemidrachm . Obv: Forepart of lion r., head turned back. Rev: Quadipartite incuse square, pellet in 2 quadrant. McClean 4055
This coin from the Greek colony of Cherronesos is the single most common of all early lion coins, It features on the obverse the forepart of a lion with tongue sticking out and looking backward, and on the reverse a four-part (quadripartite) incuse square consisting of two raised quarters and two lowered quarters, typically adorned with mint symbols on the two lowered quarters. These coins are typically described as the lion facing one direction with its head reverted, though if it's facing that direction and as its face is part of its head. The lion's curving body, tucked-in front paws, and head turned completely backward are abstracted renditions of reality that permit the design to aesthetically, and strikingly, follow the curvature of the coin. With well-preserved specimens, the lion's mane is marvelously detailed, despite the coins' small size, and the lion's body is clearly demarcated into chest, midsection, and hind quarters. Another attractive feature of these coins is the plethora of reverse symbols, which include but aren't limited to a pellet, cicada, scorpion, tunny fish, flower, torch, trowel, ram's head, caduceus, rooster, bee, wine leaf, bucranium, conch shell, scallop shell, dot in a circle, boar head, pileus, plow, sunburst, club, bow, and helmet. These coins are sometimes described as being from Tauric Cherronesos or Tauric Chersonese, "Cherronesos" (also spelled "Cherronesus," "Chersonesos," "Chersonesus," and "Chersonese") is the Greek word for "peninsula," and there were no fewer than 28 geographical areas referred to in the ancient sources as "Cherronesos." Thracian Cherronesos, which today is called the Gallipoli peninsula and is part of Turkey, is the peninsula in the northeast Aegean Sea on which the cities of Kardia/Cardia and Lysimachia were situated.

Antoinette’s dangle earrings are beautifully crafted in sterling silver featuring stacked peridot and white topaz. These earrings measure approximately 1.5” long.
Antoinette is a jewelry designer who started her manufacturing company in 1986. Antoinette believes that jewelry is more than just a fashion accessory. She takes pride in assembling a collection of evocative and original designs that use a simple elegant framework to enhance the radiance of the gemstones. Influenced by the art of adornment throughout history, as well as stone lore, and in combining inlay with bezel set stones, a new evolution of Antoinette Cleoni jewelry emerged. The result is a classic and enduring look which can be passed down from generation to generation.
