There are an estimated 180 different species of Aster, varying in different hues of purple, pink, blue, white, and yellow. Part of the same family as Sunflowers, the Aster’s name originates from the Greek word for “star” as a reference to the flower’s star-shaped flowerheads. The uniqueness of the Aster or Sunflower family is that each flower is composed of many small flowers in a disk-like flowerhead. Even the petals are individual flowers.
