EMERALD
Emeralds are part of the beryl family of gemstones. They have a Mohs hardness rating of 7.5 to 8 but they are considered brittle due to structure of their natural inclusions. Some emeralds form in unique shapes called “trapiche” which look like 6 spoked little wagon wheels. The element chromium is what gives emerald its color. Some of the finest emeralds come from Colombia, but they can be found in many locations of the world including Brazil, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Madagascar, Pakistan and more. Cleopatra owned a mine in Egypt that produced emeralds which she kept in her personal collection and that she gifted to political allies.
